Supplier Power. IMAX faces moderate bargaining power of suppliers for its projection systems. Although manufacturing firms that produce high tech components at times exert considerable power, IMAX has created and sustained long term relationships with their vendors. Although this situation is favorable currently, the high tech components needed for IMAX’s systems may only be produced by a select few number of firms. If IMAX and its suppliers were to fall on negative terms, IMAX may face a situation where their suppliers raise prices thus minimizing IMAX’s profit margins. Conversely, in Motion Picture Production, suppliers exert high bargaining power. For example, TV programming in spring of 2008 was entirely ceased due to an organized strike by the Writer’s Guild. Additionally, Hollywood stars are able to cease production on films by demanding a renegotiation of their contract for higher wages. This power of suppliers affects the production speed and quality of f ilms. In the edutainment segment, however, big name writers and actors aren’t typically used which tremendously reduces the bargaining power of suppliers. Buyer Power. In the large format film project system segment, bargaining power of buyers is low. IMAX is the only supplier for large format film equipment leaving their buyers with minimal alternatives.
